Education for Children With Disabilities
“ Progressively working with schools, communities, county and national governments and disabled people’s organisations to ensure children are able to learn and play alongside their peers in pre-school, all the way through primary tosecondary school. ”
The Status of Education for Disabled Children.
Children with disabilities are often unable to go to school because of unsuitable school buildings. In addition, there is a limited understanding within their communities and among teachers about their learning needs, which is often fuelled by prejudices around disability. Even if the Children with disabilities attend school, they are more likely to drop out early while the level of schooling they receive is frequently below that of their peers.
We endeavor to make schools more inclusive for children with disabilities. Resources, programmes and inputs that ensure lessons are stimulating and classrooms are as accessible as possible, and we ensure children with disabilities have the necessary equipment, receive specialist support and can learn with their peers.
- We want children to learn at school with other children as much as possible, and not in separate or special schools.
- Empower teachers to be able to adapt their teaching methodology to support children with disabilities.
- Buildings, classrooms with access ramps for children who are wheelchair users, accessible toilets, tactile markings and handrails to support children with visual impairments.
- Teaching and learning materials to be adapted, providing visual timetables and easy to read communication books using simple picture symbols, to support children with intellectual disabilities.
- Encouraging people with disabilities to spearhead the dialogue about what needs to change.
- Engaging proactively in discussions with both counties and national governments to make them more aware of the importance of inclusion, and also to dedicate more funding to this issue.
