Ending Violence Against Women & Girls

Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including physical and sexual violence, is a significant issue in Nyanza and Western, Kenya, with the regions experiencing high rates of violence against women, and the issue is exacerbated by cultural norms, poverty, and lack of education.

Specific GBV Challenges in Nyanza & western kenya

  • High Prevalence:

Western Kenya and Nyanza are identified as regions with high rates of GBV, including physical and sexual violence against women.

  • Spousal Abuse:
A significant percentage of women in this region report experiencing violence, with a substantial portion reporting emotional, physical, or sexual violence from their husbands.

  • Cultural Factors:
Traditional beliefs and patriarchal structures in some communities can normalize or even condone violence against women, contributing to the problem.

  • Poverty and Lack of Education:
Poverty and limited educational opportunities can further exacerbate the vulnerability of women and girls to GBV.

  • Legal and Systemic Issues:
In some cases, survivors face challenges in accessing justice and support, including inadequate police coordination and support, and prosecutors failing to adequately inform and support survivors in legal proceedings.

Key Objectives and Strategies:

  • Addressing the root causes of GBV: By focusing on behaviors, attitudes, and social norms that contribute to violence.
  • Empowering women and girls: Through education, advocacy, and capacity building.
  • Improving access to justice and support services: By establishing shelters, providing legal assistance, and ensuring access to healthcare and counseling.
  • Promoting a coordinated approach: By fostering collaboration among state agencies, non-state actors, civil society, and partners.
  • Ensuring marginalized groups benefit: By focusing on inclusivity and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
  • Leveraging technology and data-driven approaches: To monitor, evaluate, and adapt strategies.
